THE LAST FULL MEASURE OF DEVOTION: KATE WILSON
Dr Kate Wilson
Kate Wilson is a studio ceramist and academic whose practice examines emotional engagement with the banal and sometimes the ridiculous. Playing on an already established material knowledge of the viewer, Kate questions concepts of value and attachment to the inanimate ceramic object.
The Last Full Measure of Devotion has been exhibited at various venues across the country, including the Lady Chapel in Wells Cathedral, and was the culmination of Kate’s PhD.
A commemorative installation, the work consists of a loving cup for each British service life lost in Afghanistan during the conflict, individually produced from 300 grams of porcelain, equating to the average weight of the human heart. The loving cups are accompanied by a set of stitched kneelers bearing the lines taken from a poem written by a WW2 veteran. The work offers a locus for contemplation and is an attempt to quantify the immeasurable.
The Gallery and Café at Salisbury Arts Centre are open Monday to Saturday from 10am - 3pm.
