Sound at Romeo & Juliet
Wearing headphones is a critical aspect of the show, and the dialogue will not be audible without them.
You will be provided with a pair of headphones when you arrive at the theatre. These headphones sit on your ears and are lightweight with foam earpads for comfort.
There is volume control that you can adjust yourself. The ear pads are regularly changed and cleaned.
A sound check plays in the foyer before the show starts allowing you to test out what works for you. We have a range of alternative options to help everyone get the best experience of the show, and we have a team in the foyer to help find the best solution for you from the list below.
Stereo sound and on-ear headphones may not suit everyone’s hearing needs. If you are a hearing aid user, you may need to use one of the alternative options below:
- Over Ear Headphones – If you normally wear a behind-the-ear hearing aid, we can provide slightly larger, over ear headphones. In most cases, this is the best solution as the hearing aid microphone is encompassed within the headphones and so will pick up the sound without any adjustment to the hearing aid being needed.
- If you are a hearing aid user and are used to wearing your own wired headphones, you can bring these with you to plug into a small receiver that we will provide. They must have a 3.5mm mini-jack connection.
- Hearing Aids with direct input – Some hearing aids have provision for a direct sound feed via 3.5mm mini-jack. We can provide a standard 3.5mm stereo mini jack socket to plug this into. Direct input cables are bespoke to different hearing aids, so please bring your cable with you if you have one.
- Induction loop support – We can provide an induction loop system, which is worn around the neck. You would need to be able to switch your hearing aid to the ‘T’ setting and be familiar with how to change this setting manually.
- For patrons with mysophobia, a sealed bag with a pair of sanitised wireless headphones and receiver pack can be provided. It might be possible to bring your own headphones so long as they have a TRS plug – but we can’t guarantee they will work.
Please note Bluetooth hearing aids are not compatible with our sound system.
To ensure a streamline check-in process and experience, please let us know if you would require any of the alternative options listed above. We have a limited number of additional headsets per performance so it may be possible to book two different options to try during the show – this will need to be booked in advance and is limited. If you have any concerns or specific requirements other than those available above, please let the box office know in advance. We advise you to arrive at least 25-30 minutes before the start of the performance to ensure we have time to make sure everything is working correctly.
The various options available have been tested by a small group of local Hearing Aid Users, that were brought together in March 2026 by Wiltshire Creative to test and try out the kit for this production of Romeo & Juliet.

FAQs
How long is the show?
The show is 2.5 hours, including an interval. The Salisbury Playhouse foyer will be open from 1 hour before each show, for refreshments, pre-show entertainment and headphone collection.
Where is the show?
This unique new theatre show is an outdoor walkabout production, taking place in and around Salisbury Playhouse, Malthouse Lane, Salisbury SP2 7RA. The starting point (and end point) is the foyer of The Playhouse itself. The Box Office, toilets, Bar & Cafe are all located here too.
Our friendly stewards will move you from scene to scene alongside our professional actors and talented community contributors during the show.

There will not be seating available at the performance.
If you can, the show can be enjoyed standing. Or you can bring along a portable chair, something you can carry with you to each location. You can also bring your wheelchair, mobility scooter, or walking aid.
If you require a seat, but are unable to carry one yourself, we do have an option for you to reserve a seat. If you require a seat, it is highly recommended that you book this, and let us know of your requirement(s) in advance, as we only have a minimal number of these seats available, and it is not guaranteed that one would be available for you on the day without booking. If you have reserved a seat, these will be provided for you at the performance.
If you have reserved a seat, once you have collected your headphones on arrival, please make your way to the access host who will accompany you throughout the performance to the accessible seating areas. If you’ve already booked a ticket and haven’t booked a seat, please do call our Box Office team who will be able to amend your booking for you.

Travelling to and from Salisbury Playhouse
Please explore our Your Visit page for information on parking, public transport and other local amenities.
What happens if the weather is bad?
We are hopeful that all outdoor scenes will be able to go ahead, whatever the weather. We ask you to be prepared for all types of weather, so please ensure you have everything you may need with you from sunhats to waterproof jackets. We ask you to refrain from using umbrellas or parasols, as this can block the view of other audience members.
Cancellation will occur only in the worst instances of bad weather.
Can I smoke during the performance?

Is there anything else I need to bring with me on this theatrical voyage?
Your imagination and sense of adventure – be prepared to experience exhilarating theatre in a way that you never have before!
Disabled Parking Bays
The 3 Blue Badge Disabled Bays that are located outside of the Playhouse on Malthouse Lane will be suspended for the performance dates from 16 May until 7 June. The bays are within the road closure zone that we will have cordoned off for sections of the show. If you require Blue Badge Disabled parking, the Maltings/Central Car Park is the closest alternative location. Drop-off/pick up can happen outside of the cordon on Malthouse Lane before the cordon.
Wheelchairs
There is a step free route for the show, so it is wheelchair accessible. Please let us know when booking if you use a mobility aid.
If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to speak to our friendly Box Office team at Salisbury Playhouse in person from Monday – Saturday from 11am – 4pm, or by phoning 01722 320 333 or by email at box.office@wiltshirecreative.co.uk.
