THE LOVE OF THE NIGHTINGALE
By Timberlake Wertenbaker
‘A stunning adaptation of the Philomele myth written with grace, authority and economy.’Time Out (on a previous production)
As Athens is consumed by war, the king of Thrace, Tereus, is promised a marriage to Procne, the reluctant daughter of the King of Athens, after his assistance in the war.
As Procne struggles to adapt to her new life with Tereus and the unfamiliar culture around her, she longs for her sister Philomele. As Tereus travels back from Athens to Thrace with Philomele, his desire for his sister-in-law soon sets the path for brutality and revenge.
With live music and a powerful ensemble style from Stage 65 Youth Theatre, this classic tale will prove as relevant and as moving as ever.
