Same Sea, Different Boat: Making a Collagraph print with Artist Sue Brown

In our latest visual arts video resident artist Mirka Golden-Hann speaks to artist Sue Brown about her project Same Sea, Different Boat.

Same Sea, Different Boat is a quilt with a difference instigated by the project founder artist Sue Brown (the yard:ARTspace, Cheltenham) in collaboration with Louise Asher (Hope & Elvis, Nottinghamshire) and Liske Johnson (Littleheath Barn Studio, Bromsgrove). It is a social documenting textile artwork with hand printed and stitched stories lovingly produced by hundreds of artists from across the UK and further afield, each participant reacting to the COVID-19 pandemic.  This positive and moving work was destined to come to Salisbury Arts Centre in January 2020, however the current lockdown prevented us from showing it at this time.

The mission of this artwork is to collect stories, share experiences to make people laugh or cry whilst reflecting on the unknown world we now live in. Sue Brown, the project founder says: “The quilt is a metaphor for how the effects of the quarantine have isolated us, yet we have all been part of it. Making the piece open ended also illustrates that Covid-19 will continue to shape our lives - everyone has their own isolation story, and we will help tell it”.

You can create your printing plate by following Sue Brown’s tutorial in our video and if you would like to see more you can visit Sue’s Instagram @sb.brown21 or her blog here

To get involved and have your work featured on the quilt make sure you have the tools below

  • 10cm square of mount board or hard card
  • Scissors and a craft knife
  • External wood glue or PVA
  • Bits of textured paper or wall paper (optional)

Once you have watched the film and have made your print you need to post it to Sue together with a stamped addressed envelope and a suggested donation of £3 to:  Sue Brown, the yard:ARTspace, Upper Bath Street, Cheltenham, GL50 2BA.

Using a professional printing press, Sue will print your plate and return your print and plate to you. You can then embroider and stitch your print and when finished you will post this back to Sue who will incorporate your piece into the Same Sea, Different Boat quilt.
