Clancy Steer – The Nature of Imagination
Wednesday 27 February - Saturday 6 April
Leading British Theatre & Film Costume Designer Deirdre Clancy working under her family name Clancy Steer, opens up her private visionary landscape, icon paintings and costume designs in a new exhibition.
The exhibition includes evocative textural landscapes, modern figurative icons and visionary guardian figures alongside examples of her fabulous costume design watercolours and iPad paintings.
Clancy has been working in period costume design for ballet, theatre and opera since the 1960s. She is perhaps best known for her BAFTA for costume design for Mrs Brown with Judi Dench and Billy Connelly. Theatre and opera buffs will know of her numerous productions at the major theatre and opera houses all over the world that have allowed her to explore the narratives of some of the most highly regarded plays and operas of our times.
After 50 years of working this way, she is now liberating her powerful imagination to explore paintings of her own direction.
As Robin Hazlewood, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour, has said: “There is a special alchemy going on in these works and it is a privilege to enter into Clancy's private world. Her use of images, symbols, words, moods and atmospheres, create a world of 'innerscapes' evocative of inner visions and dream states… They show Clancy's delight in the mystery and magic of the creative spirit.”
Salisbury Arts Centre is open Monday - Saturday, 10am - 3pm
