Create Music for Romeo and Juliet!
We have an exciting opportunity to be part of creating original music for the Soundtrack of Romeo & Juliet 2026, alongside a professional composer.
We are looking for local music makers aged 16+ for a one-day workshop held at Salisbury Playhouse on Friday 10 April 2026, 10am – 4pm. Come together with Alex Heane (Composer & Musical Director of Romeo and Juliet), and with other musicians to create new music and soundscapes for this exciting promenade show that will be staged in May and June.
What We're Looking For
This opportunity will be suitable for you if at least one of these things applies to you:
- You have experience of writing or making your own music
- You have a passion for lyric writing
- You have the ability to play music with others using instruments or digital technology
- You can improvise freely, or can read and play from sheet music
- You can improvise using your voice and song
- You can play by ear in response to ideas
Vocalists and music-makers working primarily through improvisation or composition do not need formal grades but should be confident creating and performing material in a group setting. For those with grades, you should be playing at approximately Grade 5 level or above.
How to Apply
Send us a 1-minute recording of your voice, your music or playing an instrument to romeoandjuliet@wiltshirecreative.co.uk by 2nd March 2026. It does not have to be in any way a professional recording (a voice note equivalent will do).
We are looking for a range of musicians and places are limited, so the decision on who takes part will be about the balance required for the music of the play. Come along to the free Discovery Day on Saturday 31st January to listen to Alex explain what you can expect from the workshop!
If you have any questions, please contact romeoandjuliet@wiltshirecreative.co.uk
About Alex Heane
Alex Heane is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and sound designer working across theatre, recorded music, and interdisciplinary performance. Much of their work has been rooted in theatre, where they have collaborated as a musician and composer on productions for companies including the National Theatre, Bristol Old Vic, and Theatre Royal Bath, contributing to work that places sound and music at the heart of storytelling.
As a composer and sound designer, he creates emotionally driven, texturally rich music that combines expressive composition with detailed sonic world-building. His work is shaped by close collaboration with directors, performers, and creative teams, and informed by a wide-ranging musical practice that moves fluidly between experimental contemporary classical music, jazz, indie folk, rock, and electronic forms.
Alongside commissioned work, he runs his own creative projects, including the experimental electronic project Spio and the chamber folk trio Wisp, whose debut album is forthcoming in 2026. They also work extensively as a session musician, contributing to recordings across a broad spectrum of artists and styles.
