Oracy Skills for Young People

In the 2026-27 academic year Wiltshire Creative are working with Sarum Academy to harness the unique techniques found in theatre and share them with secondary school students through a new Oracy Through Drama Skills framework.

Our approach is based on the collaborative nature of the rehearsal room and the fundamentals of acting: voice, body, expression and intention.

Being able to communicate – to pass information to others and to understand what others say to us – is one of the most important life skills of all.

from Why Oracy Matters, a report commissioned by The English-Speaking Union, 2023. P.4

After running a pilot project with 19 students, we worked with specialists and teachers in the 2026 summer term to create a wider offer. We look forward to sharing our learning and developing this specialism for the benefit of young people across Wiltshire.

Being a confident and effective communicator opens doors, to the curriculum ... and to future opportunities. Working with an organisation like Wiltshire Creative ... creating the dedicated time for students to understand that these skills can be learned, has been truly impactful.
