In just two weeks, Salisbury Playhouse will be alive with colour, music and jungle magic as Stage 65 Youth Theatre take over the Main House with a spectacular new production of The Jungle Book.
Celebrating 60 years of Stage 65, this vibrant adaptation by Sonali Bhattacharyya features a cast of 109 young people aged 6–21, all working together to reimagine the classic tale with heart, humour and energy.
From the first day of rehearsals, ensemble spirit and collaboration have been front and centre. “Everybody gets a part and the opportunity to do everything,” says one Group 2 member. And it’s clear that the friendships formed across age groups are already a highlight: “I recognise people from previous shows… it’s nice to experience working with people of different ages,” adds a Group 3 performer.
Over the Easter break, the cast threw themselves into learning the show’s musical numbers – a new and exciting challenge for many. “It’s very catchy and I bet it’s going to get stuck in our heads!” one member joked. Rehearsals have also seen costume designs revealed and fittings begin, with personalised looks created by Wiltshire Creative’s in-house wardrobe team. “That’s so cool – it’s us!” exclaimed a thrilled Group 5 performer.
The set and costumes promise a visual feast. Cast members describe the designs as “colourful, bright, vibrant, fun, like a rainbow, joyful and busy like a carnival!” – and Bagheera’s outfit is already causing a buzz backstage.
Of course, no show comes without challenges – from learning lines and blocking to managing nerves in a big group. But the determination is clear: “It will be worth it,” says one member. For many, rehearsals have become a space to relax and express themselves outside of school.
Behind the scenes, young technicians and volunteers are stepping up too – from lighting and sound to stage management and creative support. “I’ve been helping the director as a volunteer… I like being an organiser,” says a Group 5 participant.
This year’s production is also proud to be part of Wiltshire Creative’s commitment to sustainability, using the Theatre Green Book framework to reduce waste and encourage eco-friendly theatre-making. Young people are learning not just to perform – but to build theatre responsibly.
So why should you come and see The Jungle Book? We'll let the cast convince you:
“There’s dancing!”
“I’m the DJ!”
“It’s upbeat!”
“This show is going to blow their minds!”
“It’s the kind of show we’d like to come and see.”
Don’t miss this joyful, imaginative celebration of youth, teamwork and creativity. With over 100 young people on stage and behind the scenes, The Jungle Book is a must-see family event this summer – full of wild fun, music, colour and community.
