We're Green

Wiltshire Creative is one of Britain’s leading producing organisations, with a national reputation for home-grown work of the highest quality that attracts an annual audience of over 130,000 from across Wiltshire, Hampshire, Dorset and beyond. In addition to hosting its own productions and welcoming the UK’s leading touring companies, the extensive Take Part programme engages with more than 14,000 people of all ages each year.

Wiltshire Creative is firmly committed to the principles of sustainability and aims to become a green champion within the performing arts. We will reduce our environmental impacts whilst improving our overall sustainability performance.

To achieve these objectives the key areas of our sustainability strategy are;

  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation that is relevant to the company.
  • Define and monitor our environmental impacts and select appropriate reduction activities.
  • Manage consumption of gas and electricity and take suitable and cost effective steps to reduce energy used. Where appropriate use sustainable/alternative energy to reduce the impact from consuming fossil fuels.
  • Reduce water consumption.
  • Minimise waste production and improve recycling through adoption of the waste hierarchy principles of Avoid, Reduce, Re-use, Recycle, Dispose
  • Report results annually to Arts Council England through Julie’s Bicycle
  • Encourage the use of public transport systems for business related travel, reduce the need for non-essential travel by using modern technologies and encourage staff to choose low/no carbon transport when travelling to work.
  • Ensure our suppliers are aware of our sustainability policy and are committed to reduce the impacts caused by our supply chain.
  • Purchased products will be sourced to ensure sustainability and cost effectiveness are included in the selection criteria.
  • Ensure our staff are aware of our sustainability programme and enlist their support in improving the company’s environmental performance.
  • Our policy statement will be reviewed and updated annually and displayed on our internal and external media platforms. We will regularly communicate our sustainability performance to customers, members and other significant stakeholders on progress and changes that are made.

The Pod – EDF Energy’s environmental education programme

The Pod is now the largest programme of its type.

The Pod in numbers:

  • over 17,500 registered schools in the UK (over half the schools in the UK)
  • over 10 million children engaged
  • plus more than 138 schools from 30 other countries

Our programme has three main aims:

  1. To inspire young people and their families to choose a more sustainable lifestyle.
  2. To promote STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and encourage science and engineering as a career choice.
  3. To help children understand that a low carbon, secure and affordable energy supply is vital for the future. is an interactive website for teachers, community group leaders and children. It has free lesson plans, practical activities, assemblies, films, games and information, all with cross curricular links.

We work with a number of key organisations to develop the content: Eco-Schools England, the Met Office, the British Science Association and Wastebuster. All of the resources are aimed at 4 – 14 year olds and cover the topics of energy, waste, water, transport, biodiversity and climate science.

The ethos of the Pod is ‘Learn, Act and Inspire’. We have a rich range of teaching materials and actively encourage people who use the site to post blogs and to share their ideas.

We run the national campaigns Switch-Off Fortnight and Waste Week which help the whole school, parents and the local community to engage with important environmental messages – you can find out more about our campaigns and join in here
