The Salt in our Waters

An artist from Dhaka arrives at an isolated fishing village in the Ganges Delta with a crate full of sculptures, provoking suspicion and fear among the locals.

Rudro is looked upon scornfully by the village elders, who view his city ways and his warnings of global warming and rising sea levels as a corrupting force.

There’s a storm brewing, as centuries old lifestyles and beliefs are challenged in a riveting battle of ideals.

Bengali with subtitles.

Film Programmer Patrick Bliss will be joined after the screening by Sarah Prinsloo from Salisbury Transition City.

Sarah has 26 years’ experience in environmental conservation in deprived areas in East Africa. She describes her experience as

“beautiful, incredible places and people, with a toxic mix of dwindling natural resources (or ‘ecosystem services’ as they are often termed in development jargon), poverty and lack of access to education - it is not uncommon to see coercive power structures which play on superstition, poor education and ‘tradition’ to keep people in a suboptimal position.

I’ve been back in Salisbury for 3 1/2 years, having taken a sabbatical to add my voice to calls to mitigate - and adapt - to climate change.”
