GROW UP AND JUST LOVE CHOCOLATE
Grow Up and Just Love Chocolate is a poetic journey about a young man Dave (The Shouting Mute) working out how to live his life. The spirit of his dearest school friend, Terry, is there to listen and to help Dave discover who or what he really loves. The story interweaves his many different relationships, from human ones to Comic book heroes and the objects that he must rely on to help him along his journey of discovery.
7.45pm – 8.45pm
An autobiographical narrative featuring spoken word and dance following the adventures of Birdspeed, a modern black female superhero set in both the real world and the mystical realm of West African and Caribbean folklore. Safiya, a naive young girl, falls victim to a series of injustices. Soon after a heartbreaking trial she encounters an alcoholic Obeah woman whose magic leads to the discovery of superpowers and the rise of Birdspeed. With a new-found confidence in her talents, Birdspeed finds herself in the arenas of popular culture where she is faced with an onslaught of racism and sexism. Before her mental health deteriorates she must venture back into her past and use her ancestral heritage to evolve her powers and equip herself for her greatest battle to date.
